<\/p>\nIch verspreche, dies ist das letzte Buch von John Allen, \u00fcber das ich schreibe. \ud83d\ude09 \u201cFabulous Fairisle\u201d (Lochar Publishing, Moffat) erschien 1991. Das Buch umfasst neun Kapitel. Es beginnt mit der Geschichte der Stricktechnik, beschreibt die Region und enth\u00e4lt eine Mustersammlung, gefolgt von gro\u00dfformatigen Bildern von traditionellen Mustern. Dann findet man Muster f\u00fcr dickere Garne, Informationen zu Farbgebung und unkonventionelle Anwendung von Fairisle-Mustern. Den Abschluss bilden je drei Anleitungen f\u00fcr Hand- und Maschinestricken.
\nF\u00fcr jemanden, der sich \u00fcber klassische Fair-Isle-Technik informieren m\u00f6chte, ist das Buch die falsche Wahl, denn es umfasst nicht alle wesentlichen Aspekte. Allen geht weder auf typische Musterverteilungen noch auf die klassische Farbaufteilung ein, und Steeks werden \u00fcberhaupt nicht erw\u00e4hnt. Selbst seine Handstrickanleitungen sehen vor, Vorder- und R\u00fcckenteil getrennt zu stricken. Die Beispiele im Kapitel \u201cColourings\u201d sind etwas d\u00fcrftig, verglichen z.B. mit Ann Feitelsons \u201cArt of Fair Isle Knitting\u201d (Interweave Press 1996). Allens Medium ist die Strickmaschine, aber konkrete Tipps zum Stricken von Fair Isle mit Maschine findet man kaum.
\nZwar habe ich John Allens innovative und unkonventionelle Herangehensweise im Hinblick auf Strickdesign immer gesch\u00e4tzt. Aber Fair Isle, dieser eher konservative Bereich des Strickens mit seinen relativ feststehenden Regeln, l\u00e4sst sich nicht darstellen, indem man die wichtigsten dieser Regeln \u00fcber den Haufen wirft oder ignoriert. Deshalb w\u00fcrde ich das Buch nicht empfehlen. Wer sich umfassend \u00fcber Geschichte und Stricktechniken informieren will, ist mit Feitelsons Buch oder mit Alice Starmore’s Book of Fair Isle Knitting wesentlich besser bedient. Aber auch wer nur auf der Suche nach typischen Fair-Isle-Strickmustern ist, findet z.B. in Sheila McGregors \u201cTraditional Fair Isle Knitting\u201d eine deutlich gr\u00f6\u00dfere und besser sortierte Auswahl als bei Allen.<\/p>\n

I promise, this is the last John Allen book which I review. \ud83d\ude09 \u201cFabulous Fairisle\u201d (Lochar Publishing, Moffat) was published in 1991. The book comprises nine chapters, starting with History, Environment and Knitters. It contains a Pattern Dictionary, Traditional Fairisle Patterns and Chunky-knit Designs. Information about Colourings, Unconventional uses and three instructions each for hand and machine knitted garments follow.
\nFor someone who wants to learn everything about classic Fair Isle technique, this book is the wrong choice, for it does not cover all aspects. Allen discusses neither typical pattern building nor classic flowing colour choices, and steeks are not even mentioned at all. Even his hand knitting instructions have you knit front and back separately. His examples in the \u201cColourings\u201d chapter are a bit meager, compared to Ann Feitelson’s \u201cArt of Fair Isle Knitting\u201d (Interweave Press 1996). John Allen is a machine knitter, but clear tips making Fair Isle knitting on the machine easier are hard to find in this book.
\nI’ve alway treasured Allen’s innovative and unconventional approach regarding knit design. But Fair Isle, this rather conservative field of knitting, with its fixed set of rules, cannot be fully explored by ignoring the main rules. That’s why I would not recommend this book. If you want to find information about history and techniques of Fair Isle knitting, try Ann Feitelson’s book or Alice Starmore’s Book of Fair Isle Knitting. Even if you are only looking for typical Fair Isle patterns, rather have a look at Sheila McGregor’s \u201cTraditional Fair Isle Knitting\u201d, which contains a much larger and superiorly arranged selection of patterns.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
