Seit dem Wochenende kann ich meinen Elefantentisch wieder benutzen. Der ist knapp 25 Jahre alt und wurde von meinem Vater entworfen und gebaut. Seine besonderen Merkmale waren die robuste Platte (4 cm dick, daher rührt sein Name) und zwei Beine an einer Schmalseite. Gegenüber seinen Beinen wird er an die Wand gedübelt.
Die letzten Jahre hat er mir in unterschiedlichen Wohnungen im Schlafzimmer als Allzwecktisch gedient. Mal ertrug er geduldig die Nähmaschine, mal den Mittelstricker, jederzeit aber allerlei Krimskrams. Nach einem erneuten Wohnungswechsel passte der Ärmste aber nicht mehr ins Schlafzimmer und konnte so, wie er war, aus Platzgründen auch in keinem anderen Zimmer mit der Schmalseite an die Wand gestellt werden.
Zum Glück erbarmte sich mein Vater und baute ihm ein Paar neue Beine, die nun an einer Längsseite angebracht sind. Die zweite Längsseite ist wiederum an die Wand gedübelt. Und Gretel, meine Nähmaschine, hat schon Platz genommen.
Back in use
Since last weekend, I can use my “elephant table” again. It’s about 25 years old and designed and built by my father. Its special characteristics were the sturdy top (where it got its name from) and two legs attached edgeways. The opposite edge was dowelled to the wall.
It spent the last years in several different flats as an alround table for me in the respective bedrooms, equally patiently bearing the sewing machine or the mid-gauge knitting machine, as well as lots of odds and ends at any given time. After another move, however, there was no space left in the bedroom, and the poor table could not find a nice place in another room either.
Luckily, my father took pity on it and made a pair of new legs to be fitted at the longitudinal side. The opposite side is, again, dowelled to the wall. And Gretel, my trusty sewing machine, has already taken her seat.
