Meine kleine Buchkritik – my little book review: Mary Louise Norman, “The 930 Safari”

Erschienen 1988 ohne ISBN im Selbstverlag, Denver, Colorado, 92 Seiten, viele Zeichnungen und Diagramme, eine Farbseite.
Dieses Buch ist der dritte Teil einer kleinen Serie über die Mustermöglichkeiten der Brother KH 930. Der erste Teil hieß “Brother Electronic Primer” mit dem Untertitel “Lesson plans to compliment your instruction manual” und der zweite hieß “Flying high with the 930” und befasste sich mit der Musterprogrammierung. Leider besitze ich die ersten beiden Teile nicht.
Obwohl Mary Louise Norman “The 930 Safari” speziell für die Brother KH 930 Strickmaschine geschrieben hat, ist es ebenso auf die KH 940 und teilweise auch auf die späteren Elektronikstrickmaschinen von Brother anwendbar. Hier geht es um Dopppelbett-Jacquard. Die Stricktechnik, die technischen Voraussetzungen (Garne, benötigtes Zubehör) und einige Varianten werden detailliert beschrieben. Im weiteren Verlauf erklärt Norman dann, wie 3- und 4-Farben-Jacquard vorbereitet und einprogrammiert werden. Mögliche Fehlerquellen werden aufgezeigt und Lösungen vorgeschlagen.
Ein weiteres Kapitel ist dem “Bargello”-Stricken gewidmet. Bargello oder Florentiner Stickerei ist eigentlich eine Sticktechnik, mit der vielfarbige, schattierte Effekte erzielt werden. Norman hat diese Effekte aufs Maschinestricken umgesetzt.
Drei “Bonus-Seiten” des Buchs enthalten eine Anleitung für eine Decke aus verschiedenen Musterstreifen, auf das Bargello-Kapitel abgestimmt und gestrickt mit dem KG-Schlitten.
Wer DesignaKnit oder ein ähnliches Programm benutzt, mit dem man mehrfarbige Jacquardmuster automatisch erstellen kann, wird dieses Buch wohl kaum benötigen. Aber wenn man von Grund auf lernen möchte, wie mehrfarbiges Doppelbett-Jacquard überhaupt funktioniert und wie man solche Muster manuell erstellt, dann ist “The 930 Safari” sehr hilfreich.

This book is the third of a small series about the pattern possibilities of the Brother KH 930 knitting machine. The first part was “Brother Electronic Primer”, subtitled “Lesson plans to compliment your instruction manual”, and the second part, “Flying high with the 930”, dealt with the pattern programming. Unfortunately, I do not own these previous two books.
Although “The 930 Safari” was written with the KH 930 in mind, it is equally suitable for the KH 940 and partly also for newer electronic knitting machines from Brother. The subject is double jacquard. The technique, the requirements (yarns, accessories) and some variations are explained in detail. Norman then shows how to prepare and program 3- and 4-colour jacquard. Possible sources of trouble are identified and solutions are suggested.
An additional chapter is devoted to “Bargello” knitting. Originally, Bargello is a kind of embroidery which produces multicoloured, shaded effects. Norman has converted these effects to machine knitting.
Three “bonus” pages in the book contain the instructions for a panelled afghan knitted with the garter carriage in patterns matching the bargello patterns.
If you use DesignaKnit or a similar programme to automatically produce multicoloured jacquard patterns, you will hardly need this book. But if you want to learn from scratch how multicoloured double jacquard works and how to design this pattern type manually, “The 930 Safari” will prove very helpful.
