Meine kleine Buchkritik – my little book review: Janet Nabney, “An Illustrated Handbook of Machine Knitting”

Erschienen bei B.T. Batsford, London 1987, ISBN 0 7134 5338 9, 190 Seiten, acht Farbtafeln, viele Schwarzweißfotos und Diagramme.
Dieses Buch ersetzt beinahe eine Gebrauchsanleitung; es ist aber auch für alle, die noch keine Strickmaschine haben, eine Hilfe, denn die Autorin beginnt mit dem Für und Wider eines Kaufs und gibt Tipps zur Auswahl. Dann beschreibt sie ausführlich, wie so eine Maschine überhaupt funktioniert und wie es mit dem Bemustern läuft. Ein umfangreiches Kapitel über verschiedene Mustertechniken, sowohl automatisch wie auch von Hand, schließt sich an. Auch Zubehör wie der Maschenwendekamm werden vorgestellt.
Das umfangreichste Kapitel ist das “Kompendium von Tipps und Tricks”, in dem man praktisch alles findet, was man an Grundkenntnissen zum Maschinestricken braucht. Es werden viele Anschlag- und Abketttechniken vorgestellt, die verschiedenen Möglichkeiten für Zu- und Abnahmen und jede Menge Info zu Säumen, Blenden, Ausarbeitung und weiteren verwandten Themen. Ein Kapitel über Design-Möglichkeiten rundet das Buch ab.
Allen, die ihre Strickmaschine besser verstehen und die gegebenen Möglichkeiten besser nutzen wollen, kann ich dieses Buch wärmstens empfehlen.

This book almost replaces the machine manual, but it is also a good choice for those who do not own a knitting machine yet, because the author starts with the pros and cons of acquiring a machine and provides guidance for a wise decision. She continues by explaining how a knitting machine and its pattern mechanism work. A large chapter of patterning techniques, automatic as well as manual, follows, and accessories like the garter bar are introduced.
The most comprehensive chapter is the “compendium of tips and tricks” where you find about everything you need to know about machine knitting. Several ways of casting on and off are shown, the different ways of shaping and plenty of information about hems, bands, necklines, making-up and so on. A chapter about design possibilities rounds it all off nicely.
To all who want to understand their knitting machines better and who want to make better use of their possibilities, I can highly recommend this book.
